4/18/04 Pandapas Pond, Montgomery County Virginia, Just west of Blacksburg
We went out this morning
from about 11 am until 2 or so. To our dismay, we were unable to
find any snakes. Oh well...we spotted a bunch of salamanders and turtles,
as well as numerous
birds and insects. I believe the aquatic salamanders we saw are all red
spotted newts
(Notophthalmus
viridescens viridescens ), and I think the others are
Red-backed Salamanders (Plethodon cinereus ).
I think the turtles are Northern Red-bellied
Cooters (Pseudemys rubriventris ) and Red-eared Sliders
(Trachemys scripta elegans ). Enjoy the pics. Let me know if
you think I've misidentified something!
